The US Navy's first aircraft carrier Langley was converted from the Jupiter coal carrier. The modification project began in June 1919 and was completed in March 1922. It appeared in the active service of the US Navy. It is the first true aircraft carrier in the history of the US military. The Langley, as an aircraft carrier, conducts various tactical training and exercises, providing the US Navy with experience in using aircraft carriers and many naval pilots.
In 1936, the Langley was converted into a seaplane mothership, numbered AV-3. During the Pacific War,February 27, 1942The Langley was sunk by a Japanese naval land attack aircraft while carrying a fighter mission to Java.
